Prenatal Consultations Q & A
When should I have a prenatal consultation?
Sometime in your third trimester can be the perfect time to have a prenatal consultation with your child's future pediatrician at Thousand Oaks Pediatrics. You can schedule a 15-minute prenatal consultation by calling our office. A prenatal consultation can make the transition from OB/GYN to pediatric care smooth and easy. Your child's new pediatrician gets to know you personally, and can then recommend a schedule for well-child visits that works for you and your coming child, as well as discuss vaccinations and any other questions you have, such as whether to breastfeed.
When is my baby's first appointment with the pediatrician?
Your baby will be seen daily by their new pediatrician during your hospital stay. Then, your baby will see their new pediatrician when they're 2-5 days old. You can plan a loose timeline for this visit, based on your expected delivery date, at the prenatal consultation.
The first visit is very short, in which your child's pediatrician gets to know you both. Following the first visit, your child’s Thousand Oaks Pediatrics doctor typically schedules well-child visits every 1-2 months for your child's early life, and then yearly visits after toddlerhood.
At Thousand Oaks Pediatrics, your child’s visit schedule is always customized for individual needs.
Does my child need vaccinations?
The Thousand Oaks Pediatrics team highly encourages you to vaccinate your child according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention childhood vaccination schedule. Vaccinations are the most effective way to keep your child safe from many serious and potentially deadly diseases. Some of the most common early-childhood vaccinations include:
- Hepatitis A
- Hepatitis B
- Influenza
- Rotavirus
Your baby's very first vaccination — hepatitis B — usually occurs at birth. After that, your baby's Thousand Oaks Pediatrician administers all other vaccinations over the coming months and years. Most vaccinations happen during your baby's first six months, and many vaccinations are in multiple doses.
Should I breastfeed?
Breast milk is particularly beneficial to your baby, as it contains nutrients that help protect your baby from illness and infection. However, not every mom wants or is able to breastfeed. It’s entirely up to you. Your baby’s Thousand Oaks Pediatrics doctor is here to support your family regardless of your choice.
To have the smoothest possible transition from your OB/GYN to your baby’s pediatrician, book your prenatal consultation at Thousand Oaks Pediatrics online or call the office to speak with a team member.
